Whether you’re planning to sell a single-shaft shredder or simply want an up-to-the-minute appraisal of your size reduction machinery’s current base value, Arlington Plastics Machinery is here to help. We’ve been in business since 1987 and have on-staff appraisers with certification from the Association of Machinery and Equipment Appraisers (AMEA).

There are many important elements to consider when appraising a single-shaft shredding machine, and our AMEA experts know what to look for in each make, model, and brand. The brief appraisal guide below will help you identify the key components that determine the appraised value of your specific single-shaft shredder.

Understanding the Important Specifications for a Single-Shaft Shredder

To accurately appraise a used commercial plastic shredder, our size reduction machinery experts check several equipment specifications and machine capabilities.

Rotor Design: There are many different types of rotors, and understanding the design of your specific machine is very important when it comes to valuation. The number and size of cutters is the most important to notate. The shape of the cutters and shape of the drum can vary based on application. Metallurgy or hardface welding can also be applied to the rotor to improve durability and wear resistance. Lastly, clear close-up photos of the rotor will be required to understand the condition and wear on the rotor itself.

Rotor Size: Single-shaft shredders are sized by the width of the rotor. Rotor diameter is also an important specification to record since it affects the capabilities of the machine.

Chamber Dimensions: This is the size of the cutting area of the shredder. This should not be confused with the hopper opening; although they are often the same size, there can be a difference.

Screen Size: The size of the screen will determine the finished partial size of the regrind. Typical screen sizes in a shredder are 1”-3”. The smaller the screen size, the less output the system will have.

Drive Type: There are four main types of drive systems for single-shaft shredders. Belt driven and direct drive through gearbox are the most common, and they cost less up front. High torque (specialty motors) and hydraulic drive have a higher initial cost, but their popularity on the secondary market must be taken into account during valuation.

Hydraulic Ram: Most modern shredders have a hydraulic actuated ram to aid feeding of the material in the shredder. These rams have amp feedback, multi-speed operation, and programing options to optimize feed rates for each type of material. In order to complete the appraisal, it is important to understand which features your specific commercial plastic shredder has.

Infeed/Discharge Type: There a few ways to get the processed material out of the single-shaft shredder.

Airveyor (with Blower and Cyclone): This allows continuous evacuation. Material is pulled through the blower into a cyclone, which drops the product into a gaylord box. Dust collection can be integrated into this system.

Belt/Auger Conveyor: The material is collected and loaded or evacuated under the shredder with power conveyor.
