Injection blow molding is most often used to create large quantities of plastic bottles in relatively simple shapes. Manufactured by top names like Jomar, Uniloy, and Milacron, injection blow molding machines are often used for the following applications:
- Small Medicine Containers
- Single-Serve Bottles
- Small Syringes
- Deodorant Containers
- Hygiene Bottles
Injection Blow Molding Process
Injection blow molding uses a core and mold process. In the first step, the polymer is heated and injected into a preform mold, which is clamped around a core rod/pin. During this step, the bottle neck is fully formed, including the threading that will eventually keep the cap closed.
The mold then opens to release the core rod with the preform, which is indexed to a blow station where the product is reheated and inflated to its desired size and shape. The final product is cooled and indexed to a removal station for ejection.
To accommodate for longer cooling times, additional stations can be incorporated as well. Arlington Machinery has an in-house machine shop and frequently makes customizations like these to all kinds of plastics machinery.
Benefits of Injection Blow Molding Machines
Due to the injection-molded preform process, injection blow molding allows for more precise detailing in the bottleneck than other types of blow molding. The core rods help to maintain precision and repeatability for threaded necks, even for wide-mouth applications. Overall, injection blow molding is a faster process as well.
Depending on the dimensions, extruder diameters, molds, pump motor, and clamp tonnage, injection blow molding machines can suit many types of thermoplastic resins, including:
- PP
- HDPE
- LDPE
- PVC
Alternatives to injection blow molding include extrusion blow molding (both continuous and intermittent) and stretch blow molding. Arlington carries all types of plastics molding machinery from leading brands.
